Number 30
LESE LE BON TON ROULET
(LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL)
Arlene and her staff take pride in decoratingour club the various holidays and seasons.  Our goal is to make the cabaret a venue where every night we’ll have a party atmosphere for our members and their guests. This is the season for celebrating Mardi Gras. You may get the feeling that you’re walking down Bourbon Street in New Orleans. I have always enjoyed starting my evening with an Old Fashion cocktail. The old fashion was introduced by bartender James Pepper in 1836 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. In 1838, Antoine Amedie Peychaud, owner of a New Orleans apothecary, treated his friends to brandy toddies of his own recipe, including his “Peychaud’s Bitters,” made from a secret family recipe. The toddies were made using a double-ended egg cup as a measuring cup or jigger, then known as a “coquetier” (pronounced “ko-k-tay”), from which the word “cocktail” was derived. Originally absinthe was used to swirl around the glass before pouring in the cognac. There was some controversary around using Absinthe, so later it was replaced. Because of issues with French cognac in France, the cognac was later replaced with Rye whiskey. This became known as the Sazerac.
When we produced the Sherman and Larsen musical “Pazzazz” at the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara in 2005, I got the bright idea to have all the bars around the theater serve Sazerac cocktails only I called them the Paazzerac cocktail .I simply gave all the bartenders free bottle of Sazerac Rye Whiskey if they would plug our show. It was a great idea however I found it was difficult to find Sazerac in the local liquor stores. It’s a funny story, but let’s save details for another time in a different Fun, Facts and Fantasies. As an aside, I have mentioned before about my collaboration with my dear friend Richard M. Sherman on our Smash Flops. I am pleased to announce the we have copies now in Arlene’s Gift Shop.
